Math isn't easy. Not everyone enjoys doing math. But, math is important and we believe that everyone can be successful in math if they are given adequate tools and proper instruction.
The results of the most recent EQAO testing tells us we need to increase our focus on mathematics. A similar effort has had a tremendous impact in student literacy since that was identified as a provincial priority a number of years ago.
I am greatly encouraged by the things I have seen this year in our schools and classrooms. Our response to this math challenge has been commendable. There truly is excitement about math and a refreshed attitude about this complex subject.
Our quest to build expertise is well underway. We have a Math Strategy Team, which has already conducted a series of workshops for school administrators and teacher consultants. Their enhanced knowledge is being shared with teaching staff and we are supporting them with additional resources.
The Greater Essex County District School Board is committed to not only increasing the EQAO test scores but improving the ability of students to use math in their lives and their future educational pathways.
School routine is well underway and we’re aware of the change of the season as the cooler weather arrives.
