Dear Parents and Guardians,
Learning math is an important part of your child’s education. In class, we will be doing many activities that will help your child understand and use math to solve problems and to explain mathematical ideas. You can help your child be successful by doing math at home!
• Praise your child’s efforts in mathematics. Recognize when your child uses mathematics in everyday life situations.
• Be positive about learning mathematics. Let your child know that everyone can learn mathematics.
• Make math fun. Spend time with your child playing games and doing activities that encourage better attitudes and stronger math skills.
• Talk about real-world examples of math. Point out ways that people use math every day (e.g., in the kitchen, in the grocery store, on the highway, on television).
• Encourage your child to solve problems. Provide assistance if it is needed, but let your child figure out the problem by himself or herself. Ask your child to explain how he or she solved the problem.
Thank you for helping us support your child.
The Ontario Math Curriculum is designed to help students build the solid conceptual foundation in mathematics that will enable them to apply their knowledge and further their learning successfully. At Belle River we take building a conceptual understanding seriously. Conceptual Understanding is the ability to understand mathematical concepts, operations, and relationships. Seeing the relationships among procedures and concepts also helps develop mathematical understanding. The more connections students make, the deeper their understanding. Staff are using research supported teaching strategies, using math manipulatives and tools that support mathematic understanding.
At home you can encourage students to explore math tools at mathies.ca. Furthermore, If your child brings home math tools and you don’t know how to use them. Check out http://mathies.ca/tipSheets.php for tips on how to use math tools.
Parental Support is valued! Thank you -
