What does the Student Success Teacher do?
The Student Success Teacher identifies the at-risk students, initiates program changes, advocates for students and tracks progress. Often times, there is a need to be creative with timetables, workload, co-op and other alternative educational settings.
The Student Success Teacher works collaboratively with the Classroom Teacher in trying to rescue a students’ credit that may be in jeopardy before it is too late.
SST Roles
- Provide direct support/instruction to students to improve achievement.
- Support school efforts to improve outcomes for struggling students.
- Try to re-engage early school leavers.
- Support students through key transition points from elementary to secondary school.
- Develop positive relationships with students based on mutual respect.
- Monitor attendance – strong attendance supports success.
- Make classroom observations.
- Ensure that class work is completed.
- Work one-on-one with students on assignment completion.
- Help students develop effective work and study skills.
- Work with teachers to create behaviour/ improvement plans for student improvements.
- Track progress of each student throughout the semester at progress reports, midterm reporting, and final report.
- Access additional supports. This may include making referrals to guidance/youth care worker/administration. ie. Schedule recommendations.
- Advocate for student needs.
- Work on credit rescue/recovery.
