School history
Our school was founded in 1952. The sod turning for Princess Elizabeth took place on March 11, 1952 and the official opening ceremony was celebrated on November 14, 1952. The original building consisted of five rooms with 2 more rooms added in December 1953, along with an auditorium. During the next 20 years, Princess Elizabeth operated as a kindergarten to grade 6 school under the leadership of Mr. Peter MacKenzie, Mr. Rex Walker and Mr. Robert Holden.
In 1977 a big change occurred at Princess Elizabeth. Because of declining enrollments in some elementary schools, an amalgamation of some schools was necessary to keep program options available to all pupils in the Windsor Board of Education. The project enrolment at Princess Elizabeth was dangerously low and it was targeted as one school to be considered in the amalgamation study. In 1976-1977 there were only 148 students from kindergarten to grade 6. Sandwich East School was another school being studied. This school, approximately 2km south of Princess Elizabeth, was in need of repair and renovation. The recommendation from the committee was to close Sandwich East. The parents of Sandwich East school decided that they wanted to keep their student body together and they wanted their children to attend Princess Elizabeth School. Staff from both schools were carefully selected so that both schools were represented and Mr. Don Gall, principal of Sandwich East, became the new principal of Princess Elizabeth in September 1977. Throughout the next several years, Mr. Gall was succeeded by Mr. Ken Angus and Mr. Doug Cowan as principals.
In 1985, Edith Cavell School, which housed all the grade 7 and 8 students from the Riverside area closed and the K-6 schools began to accept grade 7 students, and the following year, grade eight students.
The next big renovation of the school was in 1985 when a Creative Arts wing was built along with a gymnasium, a music classroom, a library and an office. In the fall of 1991 Princess Elizabeth had their first vice-principal, Mrs. Sharron White.
In September 2021, Princess Elizabeth welcomed its first GAINS classroom (Giving Attention to Individual Needs and Strengths) serving students with special education needs.
