The Student of the Month for April is Marissa Mowers, a Gr. 12 student at Belle River District High School. Marissa is an outstanding role model for the theme of “initiative”.
Marissa is a passionate advocate for social justice, environmental stewardship, anti-racism, and 2SLGBTQIA+ representation. When Marissa sees an opportunity to create a positive impact, she doesn’t wait for that change to happen - she makes that change herself.
She has initiated change and shared goodness many times during her high school career. For example, Marissa took the lead on Belle River’s EcoTeam, reviving it and transforming it into a popular and active group. Marissa also went on to lead Belle River’s GSA, expanding it to be a safe space for all students. Marissa noticed that some school events were not fully inclusive of all holidays and cultures, so she ran for Prime Minister to make school events inclusive. During her time as a Belle River Noble, Marissa has helped her peers understand what it means to create a welcoming and inclusive school environment.
When she graduates this spring, Marissa’s positive impact on the school community will not leave with her. Marissa’s sense of initiative has inspired her fellow Nobles to continue striving toward increased equity and inclusion. Nobles know that they can make the change they want to see. Thank you, Marissa, for your courage, dedication and inspiration to the Belle River school community.
Congratulations Marissa for being selected by Student Senate as Student of the Month for April!
