WCI Social Sciences & Humanities Department
Welcome to the enriching world of Social Sciences and Humanities at Walkerville Collegiate Institute, where we explore the intricacies of society, culture, and individual development.
Starting in Grade 9, students delve into the multifaceted dynamics of family life exploring such topics as parenting styles, cultural diversity in family units and strategies for promoting healthy family functioning. In Grade 10, students embark on a culinary journey with Food and Nutrition, laying the foundation for understanding the role of food in a healthy lifestyle. As they progress to Grade 11, our courses expand to include Food and Culture, Understanding Fashion, World Religions and Belief Traditions, and Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology, as well as Equity, Diversity, and Social Justice. This comprehensive exploration delves into the multifaceted aspects of human societies and behaviors. Finally in Grade 12, our department continues to offer diverse perspectives with courses like Food and Healthy Living, Families in Canada, Human Development Throughout the Lifespan, and Personal Life Management. These courses provide a deeper understanding of individuals, families, and societal structures, empowering students to navigate the complexities of contemporary life.
Join us in the Social Sciences and Humanities Department, where we cultivate critical thinking, cultural awareness, and a nuanced understanding of the world around us. Together, we explore the human experience in its various dimensions.
