This month’s SHSM Student Spotlight shines on Lindsay Stieler, a dedicated Arts and Culture student from Belle River District High School, nominated by her teacher, Ms. Tamara Cirino. Lindsay’s passion for the arts has been nurtured through the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program, where she has engaged in hands-on experiences, co-op placements, and certifications that have set her on the path to a successful career in the arts. Her journey is a testament to how SHSM programs open doors to unique career paths and foster personal growth.

We asked Lindsay a few questions about her experiences in the SHSM program. Read on for her responses!
1. How did you first hear about the SHSM program? What made you decide to join in the Arts and Culture sector?
I first learned about the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in grade 9 from my Geography teacher, Mr. Pula. When it was time to choose a sector, it was a tough decision because I’m passionate about both environmental activism and arts. However, arts and culture have always been at the core of my life. I grew up surrounded by creativity—music, yarn creations, and cinematic movies—and felt a natural pull towards this field. My family and teachers encouraged me to explore different forms of art, and I’ve never looked back.
2. Can you share your experience with your SHSM co-op placement?
During the summer of 2023, I did a co-op at the Arts Council Windsor and Region (ACWR). It was an eye-opening experience where I learned about grant writing, networking, and the inner workings of professional artist spaces. The most valuable lesson I learned is that help is always available if you ask for it. This placement inspired me to pursue higher education in the arts, and I’m now planning to study history and theatre at university.
3. What has been the biggest challenge you faced in the SHSM program, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was overcoming the stigma attached to pursuing arts and culture. There’s a misconception that an arts degree won’t lead to success, but I’ve learned to ignore those voices and have faith in my passion. Choosing this path required a lot of confidence, and it’s something I’ve come to be proud of.
4. How has the SHSM program influenced your post-secondary plans?
SHSM played a huge role in shaping my future. Before joining, I considered becoming a doctor or lawyer, but SHSM opened my eyes to a career in arts and culture. I now aspire to become a professor, thanks to the support of my incredible teachers and the enriching experiences I had in the program.
5. What skills or certifications have you gained through SHSM that you feel are most valuable?
My first aid and CPR certification has been extremely useful. I’m currently the designated first aid person at my workplace and applied this training at a summer camp. Another standout experience was a stage-fighting workshop at the Capital Theatre, which aligned perfectly with my interest in drama.
6. What has been the most rewarding aspect of participating in the Arts and Culture SHSM?
The best part has been the amazing field trips! The 2022-23 end-of-year trip to Toronto and Niagara Falls was my favorite. We explored art galleries, did a graffiti tour, and experienced the beauty of Niagara Falls. These trips not only enhanced my learning but also created lifelong memories.
7. What advice would you give to other students considering joining the SHSM program?
If you’re considering SHSM, go for it! It’s been one of the best experiences of my high school years. SHSM provides valuable co-op experiences, certifications, and wonderful connections with teachers and peers.
8. Lastly, who has been your biggest support throughout your SHSM journey?
My biggest support has been my art teacher, Ms. Cirino. She has been like a second mother to me, providing guidance, support, and opportunities, like helping me secure my co-op placement. I’d also like to thank Ms. Lewsaw, Ms. Papak, Mr. Walstedt, Ms. Bissonette, and my family for their encouragement.
