The GECDSB is preparing to conduct our first Student Census this April. This survey is part of the GECDSB’s ongoing Equity Action Plan, aligning with our commitment to student success and well-being. Distribution of the survey is mandated by the Ontario Ministry of Education, but participation is voluntary.
It is important to note that the census will be confidential, but not anonymous. The purpose of collecting this data is to analyze the experiences of students. To do this, we need to merge the survey data with data from our student information system. This means that we need to include a way to identify students.
Broad community consultation is currently being undertaken with community groups and organizations to finalize the list of questions that will be posed to students. The results of the census will help us understand the unique experiences of our student population to reduce inequities and better serve their varied needs.
Parents/guardians of students in Grades JK-8 can complete the survey with their child at home, while students in Grades 9-12 will have an opportunity to complete the survey at school. Parents/guardians who do not want to participate in the census can let us know. Information on opting out of participation will be shared in the coming weeks.
A comprehensive “Frequently Asked Questions” document and dedicated email address will be distributed to all GECDSB families when the census questions have been finalized should there be any questions or concerns.
