2023 Scholarship and Bursary Recipients

Bill Lamb Memorial

Bill Lamb was born, raised and educated in Windsor, Ontario. During his twenty-three years of employment with The Windsor Board of Education, he served as a classroom teacher, Assistant Coordinator of Programs for the Gifted and Developmentally Challenged, Program Leader for the Community Living Program at Walkerville and Special Education Services Consultant. Bill will always be remembered for his work; supporting the needs of students with developmental challenges at both local and provincial levels. He firmly believed that the educational goals for students with developmental challenges are no different from those for any other students. Bill promoted assisting individuals to perform and achieve at the maximum of their ability. He focused on providing equal access and opportunity for all people with developmental challenges in our community.   In addition to maintaining above average academic standing, demonstrating good character as well as leadership, the scholarship recipient must confirm attendance to a College in the Developmental Support Worker program.

W.L. Clark

In memory of Willis Lumgair Clark, the W. L. Clark Bursary Fund was established. Mr. Clark was the former editor of The Windsor Record newspaper, later known as The Windsor Star. He passed away in 1974 and bequeathed a portion of his estate to The Board of Education for the City of Windsor. He stipulated that the funds be distributed to students who were pursing their post-secondary studies at a university. In addition to participating in school activities, he required that bursary recipients must demonstrate strong leadership ability, initiative and academic achievement.

Junior Achievement Scholarship & Bursary

In 2002, Junior Achievement of Windsor Essex County Inc. closed its doors after forty-six years of service to the youth of our community. Junior Achievement has provided education for youth in our community and, as that was its primary goal, a sum of money has been donated to the Greater Essex County District School Board to establish a Junior Achievement Scholarship and Bursary Fund.  Scholarship and bursary recipients must be pursuing a college or university, maintain good academic standing and demonstrate good character. They must have a significant demonstration of participation in volunteer/community involvement activities in addition to demonstrating leadership, initiative and achievement.

William Barrott

This award is given in the name of Mr. William Barrott. As a student from Windsor, studying in the Engineering Program at Queen’s University, Bill received the IODE bursary. Now his wish is to support a young person from Windsor to further their educational goal in Engineering.   Scholarship recipient must provide proof of enrolment and acceptance into an accredited engineering program at a Canadian University.  They must demonstrate leadership, initiative and achievement will participating in school activities and maintaining a good academic standing.

2SLGBTQIA+ Leaders to be Proud

The Leaders to Be Proud Scholarship Award recognizes graduation students who advocate for inclusivity, diversity and support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community within their school or hometown. The Leaders to Be proud Scholarship Award is the first of its kind in the Essex region aimed at honoring students who show strong leadership skills and community service through participation in Inclusive Organizations or initiatives at their school and/or within their community.

StudyInsured

These scholarships are to be awarded annually to International Students attending a secondary school under the jurisdiction of the Greater Essex County District School Board and who are intending to attend university or college in Ontario.  Successful recipient must be a current policy holder of StudyInsured by Ingle International health insurance.  Maintaining a good academic standing and demonstrating leadership are also preferred attributes for this award.

Every Child Matters

The GECDSB Every Child Matters scholarship is awarded to a graduating student who identifies as First Nations, Metis or Inuit. Students applying for this award created a document or video providing details of the negative impact of residential schools upon themselves and their families. Through this award, it is the intention of the GECDSB to honour the families of residential school survivors and provide financial support to students who have been so negatively impacted upon. This financial support will assist students in making their dreams more affordable as they head to post-secondary programs such as college, university, technical or vocational training.

Robert Little & Debra Deane Little

The Robert Little and Debra Deane Little Scholarships are outstanding in both their value and positive impact as they truly change the trajectory of our students’ lives. The Little and Deane Little scholarships are awarded to 10 GECDSB graduating students at a value of $10,500 per year, for up to 4 years of post-secondary studies at a Canadian university (for a total per student amount of $42,000). We are so thankful for the generous financial support provided by Bob and Debra.

Students awarded the Little and Deane Little scholarships have demonstrated academic competence. They have also received a supporting letter of reference from a teacher at their school and a recommendation from the school team made up of guidance staff and administration. These students have also demonstrated a commitment to non-academic pursuits; having been involved in activities that allow them to hone their leadership skills, well-rounded extra-curricular participation and commitment to their community.
