This month’s SHSM Student Spotlight features Izabela Trajkovski , a passionate and curious student from Walkerville, who has embraced the Environmental Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program as a way to deepen her understanding of sustainability and environmental issues. Drawn to the program for its hands-on learning opportunities and immersive field trips, Izabela has developed valuable skills and gained a fresh perspective on how individual actions can contribute to a healthier planet.
Her journey through the program has been filled with challenges, growth, and inspiring experiences that have shaped her outlook on both education and the environment. From navigating with a compass on field expeditions to earning certifications that push her out of her comfort zone, Izabela has truly made the most of the Environmental SHSM.
We sat down with Izabela to hear more about her experiences in the program and how it has influenced her future aspirations. Read on for her insights!
1. What interests you the most about the Environmental SHSM program, and why do you think it stands out compared to other pathways?
What interests me most about the Environmental SHSM program is how up-to-date the knowledge is and how hands-on the field trips are. While the other SHSMs at my school seemed great, I felt that the Environmental SHSM would give me a better understanding of the area I live in and the actual state of our world. Even though it may not be as broadly applicable to different careers, I saw it as an opportunity to become more aware of my surroundings and the bigger environmental picture.
2. Why did you choose to enrol in the Environmental SHSM program, and what initially drew you to it?
I originally enrolled because my class schedule didn’t align with other SHSMs, but what truly drew me in were the field trips. They offered the full package—allowing me to be active while learning practical skills and real-world knowledge at the same time.
3. Can you describe a project or activity in the program that you found particularly inspiring or meaningful?
One field trip that really stood out to me was our visit to Point Pelee Camp. We earned certifications in compass navigation, knot-tying, and fire safety, which were all useful skills. However, what made the experience even more meaningful were the seminars and nature walks. We had the opportunity to learn from professionals about native wildlife and the environment, deepening our understanding of their importance.
4. How has the Environmental SHSM program changed your perspective on environmental issues and sustainability?
The program has shown me how interconnected everything is and how close to home environmental issues really are. Before, these problems seemed too large for one person to impact, but now I realize that even small actions add up. Being informed and making conscious choices—whether it’s reducing waste, supporting sustainable initiatives, or raising awareness—can make a real difference, even on a local level. It has made me more mindful of my own impact and motivated to be part of the solution.
5. What certifications or training have you completed through the SHSM program, and how do you think they’ll benefit your future career goals?
I have earned certifications in map reading, GPS navigation, wilderness survival training, fire safety, and First Aid. We also participated in activities like biking and treetop climbing, which challenged my quick thinking and adaptability. While these may not directly relate to my future career in computer science, they have helped me develop critical thinking, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm under pressure—essential skills in any field, especially cybersecurity. The GPS and mapping experience could even be useful if I ever work with location-based technology or data analysis.
6. What challenges have you encountered in the program, and how did you overcome them?
One challenge was adapting to the hands-on, outdoor learning style. I was used to more structured, classroom-based learning, so activities like navigating with a compass in unfamiliar terrain or completing physical challenges like treetop climbing pushed me out of my comfort zone. I overcame this by staying open to new experiences, asking for help when needed, and trusting the process. Over time, I became more confident in learning through experience rather than just theory.
7. How do the program’s hands-on learning opportunities, such as field trips or co-op placements, contribute to your overall experience?
The hands-on learning experiences, particularly the field trips, made the program far more engaging and meaningful. Instead of just reading about environmental issues, I got to witness them firsthand—whether it was exploring ecosystems on a nature walk, practising survival skills, or using GPS and compasses in real-world settings. These experiences helped me retain information because I wasn’t just learning about it—I was living it.
8. What advice would you give to students considering the Environmental SHSM program?
I would encourage students to go for it, especially if they enjoy hands-on learning and being outdoors. Even if you don’t plan on a career in the environmental field, it’s an incredible opportunity to gain practical skills, challenge yourself, and develop teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability.
9. Is there anyone you’d like to thank for supporting you during your SHSM journey?
I’d like to thank my Guidance Counsellor, Mr. Pfaff, who encouraged me to join the program. He helped me find an alternative SHSM when my original plan didn’t work out and supported me throughout the entire process. His guidance made all the difference.
