This month’s SHSM Student Spotlight shines brightly on Lauryn Smith from Essex District High School—a dynamic, driven, and deeply compassionate student from Essex who is redefining what it means to lead through service. As part of the Non-Profit, Education & Childcare Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program, Lauryn has woven community involvement, academic excellence, and unstoppable spirit into every step of her high school journey.
We sat down with Lauryn to hear more about her SHSM journey and what drives her passion for service and leadership.
1. What has been the most enjoyable part of your SHSM experience?
Serving my community has been the most enjoyable part of my SHSM experience. I have been able to volunteer at community service events, which ultimately inspired me to create my own. These experiences have helped to shape my high school journey as they have helped me to explore and become further involved with my passions.
2. Why did you choose the Non-Profit SHSM program?
I chose to get involved in the Non-Profit SHSM program because it allows me to receive certifications and training that will benefit me in my future career.
3. Can you share an initiative you’re especially proud of?
An initiative that I am especially proud of is my Non-Profit organization, the Essex Fun Fest 5k Walk Run Wheel. I combined my passions for athletics and giving back to bring my local community together and raise several thousand dollars for our local food bank.
4. How has the SHSM program helped you grow as a leader?
The SHSM program has allowed me to grow as a leader as it has given me real-life experiences where my leadership skills were tested, making me a stronger, more adaptable leader.
5. What certifications have you completed so far, and how will they benefit your future?
As of now, I have completed my CPR and First Aid certifications, the Experiential Learning Activities, and Reaching Ahead. I achieved the Experiential Learning Activities certification through the Pastabilities fundraiser. This experience will help me in the future as it forced me to become adaptable to the fast-paced environment.
6. What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
A challenge I have faced is balancing academics, athletics and extracurriculars. However, SHSM has connected me with the teachers and provided me with the training to allow me to excel in all aspects of my life.
7. What aspects of the SHSM program have been most meaningful to you?
Hands-on experiences have been one of my favourite parts of the SHSM program. They allow me to network with young leaders from across Windsor-Essex who have helped to diversify my thinking while creating new friendships.
8. What advice would you give to students thinking about joining SHSM?
The best advice I could give to students interested in joining the SHSM program is to simply take the opportunity. SHSM will open doors you don't even know exist. You will be able to explore your subject of interest while building relationships with students and teachers.
9. Has SHSM influenced your future career goals?
A career goal I have developed because of the SHSM program is to give back to my community. SHSM has allowed me to serve my community, which I have realized is a passion of mine. Because of this, I hope my career allows me to continue to give back.
10. Who would you like to thank for supporting you?
I would like to thank all of the staff at Essex High for helping to shape my leadership journey. Specifically, Mrs. McAiney, Mrs. Lindsay and Madame Scalia for going above and beyond for the students to help us in all aspects of our education. Finally, I would like to thank my family for supporting me in all that I do.
