The Student of the Month for June is Sulayman Syed, a Grade 12 student at Vincent Massey Secondary School and an outstanding role model for this month’s theme of “leadership”.
It may be difficult to stand out at Massey, with over 2,000 students and so many passionate leaders working to make the school experience the best it can be. However, Sulayman clearly embodies the spirit of a natural-born leader who is constantly working to better his own leadership skills and advocating for student voice. Sulayman doesn’t just go above and beyond; he shoots for the moon to better the Massey school community.
A member of student council, Sulayman understands the importance of communicating with students. He seeks input in an effort for everyone to feel included and invites feedback and constructive criticism. He lives by the notion that no one should be left behind.
Sulayman never fails to be seen running around the school chasing down a new idea and organizing events to engage the student body. As part of Massey’s Relay for Life committee, Sulayman coordinated and executed a 1,000-person event under tight timelines and immense stress. As the chairperson of Massey’s Muslim Student Association at Massey, Sulayman works fearlessly to ensure his peers have someone to turn to. He promotes an inclusive environment for Mustangs while sharing the beauty of the religion and culture through bake sales, promotional posts, and even helping facilitate Friday prayer for students by purchasing of over 100 prayers mats.
Above all, Sulayman is passionate, courageous, caring and generous with his time. He truly embodies this month’s theme of “leadership”. Congratulations Sulayman on being selected by Student Senate as the June Student of the Month!
