The Student of the Month for May is Avery Baker, a Grade 12 student at North Star High School. Avery is an outstanding role model for this month’s theme of “volunteerism”.
Since the age of 3, Avery has dedicated her time to the art and craft of dance. Volunteerism may be seen by some students as a task to be completed, but Avery saw this as an opportunity to give back to a place that had shaped her into the person she is today. Avery has collected almost 400 community service hours, giving back to others by teaching dance to children. Throughout this time, she has become a role model and mentor for young dancers at The Dance Barre, instilling a love of dance and creative expression.
Avery is an active and passionate member of the North Star school community. In her role on Student Council, she always volunteers for additional responsibilities. Avery is a North Star Peer Mentor, offering her time to tutor North Star students and helping grade eight students make the transition to high school.
Avery lets her creative side shine through the North Star Dance Team where she is one of the co-captains, leading the team as they prepare for Dance Fest 2023. To support their trip, Avery organized a face-painting fundraiser at the North Star Spring Fest in April. Avery is an exemplary North Star Wolf who views volunteerism as a valuable way to give back to the communities that have shaped who she is today.
Congratulations Avery for being selected by Student Senate as the Student of the Month for May!
