On October 18, 2024, students from Westview Freedom Academy embarked on a field trip aboard Windsor Premier Cruises, exploring the rich history of Windsor and Detroit from the unique vantage point of the Detroit River. The Opportunities for Learning and Success (OLS) program organized the excursion and invited some of the History, Civics and Careers, and Geography classes from the school to participate with them.
This immersive experience allowed students to witness firsthand the historical significance of key Windsor landmarks, including Hiram Walker’s Distillery, the Ambassador Bridge, Dieppe Gardens, and the new Gordie Howe Bridge, among many other important sites. Expert guides provided fascinating insights into the relationship between Windsor and Detroit, touching on themes such as trade, culture, and development over the centuries.
The cruise offered a dynamic learning environment. As students engaged with the sites, they took pictures and documented key points, which helped them better understand the significance of Windsor’s role in shaping the region’s past and future. The field trip was a resounding success, with students gaining a deeper appreciation of local history while building connections to their classroom learning. This experience not only brought history to life but also sparked curiosity about our community’s rich heritage. This was the first time this field trip has been offered, which opens the door for other classes and schools to experience our community in this way. Thank you to Captain Paul of Windsor Premier Cruises and way to go Falcons!
