The Ontario Government has committed to help public agencies better understand and manage their energy consumption. As part of their undertaking, Ontario Regulation 397/11 under the Green Energy Act (2009) requires public agencies: municipalities, municipal service boards, school boards, universities, colleges and hospitals to report on their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions annually beginning in 2013 and to develop and implement energy conservation and demand management plans starting in 2014.
Energy Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting
The Greater Essex County District School Board develops an annual report that investigates energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for each school and administrative facility for which we are responsible for the utility consumption. This report is developed through an energy management tool as required by the Ministry of Energy.

Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan
The Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) considers energy conservation and associated greenhouse gas emission reductions necessary in demonstrating responsible leadership and being a good local and global citizen.
As an educational institution we have the responsibility to deliver clear messaging to students on the importance of conserving energy and reducing our footprint on the planet.
Our Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan outlines the GECDSB's:
- Asset portfolios and energy management planning
- Compliance with the Province of Ontario's Green Energy Act
- Environmental stewardship and participation in the Ontario EcoSchools program
- Energy consumption data collection, reporting and reduction targets
- Energy procurement
- Renewable energy systems
- Energy conservation measures, goals and management strategy
